The song’s story
A homeless heart asks for a small handful of happiness, even as it slips through the fingers.
Olga Anikina's Russian text (2009) responds to the Yiddish song A Bisele Mazl; the linked performance is by Elechka.
Start from Olga’s Russian
Her Russian text is our starting point. Olga reimagines earlier songs while keeping their spirit.
Keep her images, word meanings, expressions and structure. Make the English sing without replacing her story.
Producer-confirmed: exclusive rights to these Russian lyrics. Rights to underlying music and recordings are separate.

| 1 Вот мне бы хоть чуточку счастья | If only I could have even a little happiness |
| 2 Хоть горсточку счастья бы мне | If only I could have at least a handful of happiness |
| 3 И ставни распахнуты настежь | And the shutters are wide open |
| 4 А солнца не видно в окне | But no sun can be seen in the window |
| 5 Но всё что прошу я у неба | But all that I ask of heaven |
| 6 Уместится даже в горсти | Would fit even in a cupped hand |
| 7 Мне бы малую горсточку счастья | If only I could have a small handful of happiness |
| 8 Горсточку чтоб было легче нести | A handful, so it would be easier to carry |
| 9 А в чем я был счастлив когда то | And what once made me happy |
| 10 То нынче лишь дым да зола | Is now only smoke and ash |
| 11 Не нужно мне славы и злата | I do not need fame or gold |
| 12 Мне б только немножко тепла | If only I could have a little warmth |
| 13 Но счастие тоненькой струйкой | But happiness, in a thin little stream |
| 14 Стекает меж пальцев моих | Flows down between my fingers |
| 15 Ах верните мне горсточку счастья | Ah, give me back a handful of happiness |
| 16 Горсточку счастья хоть на миг | A handful of happiness, even for a moment |
| 17 Ах верните мне горсточку счастья | Ah, give me back a handful of happiness |
| 18 Мазл а биселе глик | Luck, a little happiness [retained Yiddish phrase] |
| 19 Приходят за бедами беды | Troubles follow troubles |
| 20 И хрипло кричит вороньё | And the crows cry hoarsely |
| 21 И бродит по белому свету | And wanders through the wide world |
| 22 Бездомное сердце моё | My homeless heart |
| 23 И я собираюсь в дорогу | And I am preparing to set out |
| 24 И мне очень нужно найти | And I very much need to find |
| 25 Эту малую горсточку счастья | That small handful of happiness |
| 26 Горсточку чтоб было легче нести | A handful, so it would be easier to carry |
Idioms & meaning
Но всё что прошу я у неба
Literal: But all that I ask of heaven.
Here the appeal to the sky is figuratively an appeal to heaven or fate. 'Ask of the sky' is physically literal but can obscure the emotional sense.
Горсточку чтоб было легче нести
Literal: A handful, so it would be easier to carry.
The smallness of the request and the ease of carrying it belong together. Preserve the tender understatement rather than adding a slogan about limitless happiness.
Мазл а биселе глик
Literal: Luck, a little happiness.
A retained Yiddish phrase. The brief supplies its broad meaning while preserving the source spelling; a Yiddish-language review should settle final pronunciation and transliteration.
По белому свету
Literal: Through the white world.
An ordinary Russian expression for the wide world. It is not a claim that the landscape is white or snow-covered.
Дым да зола
Literal: Smoke and ash.
What once brought happiness has become something lost or ruined. Keep this image without supplying an unstated fire, battlefield or specific historical event.
Стекает меж пальцев моих
Literal: Flows down between my fingers.
The cupped hand can hold a small amount, but happiness slips out like liquid. The image joins the wish for a handful to the speaker's inability to keep it.
Your writing brief
Keep the cupped hand, slipping liquid, warmth and homeless heart connected.
